Media summary

Prominently located on Cairns’ Northern Esplanade, the heritage-listed Floriana Boutique Hotel exemplifies the careful balance of historical preservation and modern functionality. Designed by E.R. Orchard in 1939, this Art Deco gem integrates streamlined curves, symmetrical façades, and Maltese design elements tailored for the Tropics.
The project meticulously restored original features, including timber-framed casement windows, decorative plasterwork, and terrazzo detailing, while discreetly integrating modern amenities for comfort. Internally, the restoration reinstated the original spatial logic, creating a functional 10-bedroom layout while preserving and enhancing the building’s heritage features. The ballroom, a focal point of the guesthouse, was restored to its historic grandeur, re-establishing its role as a community and cultural venue.
Under CA Architects stewardship, this restoration honours Floriana’s architectural heritage and cultural significance, standing as a testament to the enduring relevance of thoughtful design that merges history with the evolving demands of contemporary hospitality in the Tropical North.

The Floriana building, a rare Art Deco gem on the Cairns Esplanade, had fallen into disrepair before I purchased it in 2019, recognising its potential. Partnering with local CA Architects and Celtic Carpentry, we restored its original charm, adding a Mediterranean restaurant, cocktail bar, and alfresco terrace paved with marble from Chillagoe. Each luxury bedroom was individually designed for comfort and style. The aim was to create a distinctive space with European-inspired atmosphere in a tropical setting. The renovation transformed the property into the Floriana Boutique Hotel, offering guests an elegant and unforgettable experience.
