Media summary

The change room upgrade at Fahan School is the first completed project for the school following the 2023 masterplan by Bence Mulcahy.

Fahan is an all-girls school situated on a heritage listed campus, with a focus on outdoor education and sport.

Our masterplan prioritises the landscape setting and this project strives for enhanced indoor/outdoor space for learning and social connection.

The 1980s brick block building is retained with internal replanning for private amenities and greater storage. An accessible toilet/shower room off the verandah doubles as a referee change room and on the exterior a new concrete podium and verandah extension enhance amenity and accessibility.

Colour amplifies the existing pink brick and block and ties to the historic Hobart-red brick campus.

The project is emblematic of the school’s enduring commitment to sport and outdoor education. It is a modest project, and is experimentation for works to follow.

The new facilities enhance our ability to support sporting and outdoor programs. The new change room has significantly improved the usability of the space for our staff and students.  It is evident that significant thought that has gone into design including the placement of teaching aids such as whiteboards and the open layout creates an effective area for team briefings. The hooks and bench seating are practical additions to maximise the space, and the expanded storeroom makes equipment much easier to access and organise. Even the water fountain is in the exact right space and is a well‑used feature!
