The revitalisation of the historic Exchange Hotel in Pinjarra balances the preservation of a local landmark with a composition of contemporary architectural insertions. The considered integration of modern elements with heritage structures. allowing the architectural character of each period to be revealed. Engaging with George street, the town square, and Murray River, the permeable layout invites exploration from all approaches.
Inside, intimate heritage spaces transition into open, light-filled contemporary volumes. Courtyards and external areas seamlessly extend the interiors, creating a layered experience. The design process was guided by conservation principles, with interpretive themes woven throughout via signage and restored architectural elements.
The reinvention of the Exchange Hotel has revitalised its presence as a vibrant landmark, deepening the community’s appreciation for its history. Through its preservation and re-imagining, the hotel continues to serve as a cornerstone of Pinjarra’s identity.
The Shire of Murray redeveloped the historic Exchange Hotel in Pinjarra to create a modern hospitality complex for the local community and as a regional destination. The project architects conserved and adaptively reused the hotel buildings and linked them with modern additions to create a vibrant venue that contributes to the regeneration of the main street and adjoining public spaces.
Working alongside the Hunt Team to reinvigorate the historic Exchange Hotel was fantastic. Being a 130+ year-old venue, the project was an exciting opportunity to sculpt the next chapter in this much-loved building’s story. It’s age also gave the project some unique challenges, but the Hunt team were always willing to adapt with the building and find solutions that stayed true to vision. The result of our close collaboration is a hospitality venue that combines the best of modern architecture with Pinjarra’s local heritage, and offers a unique and exciting place for locals and visitors to meet, relax and celebrate.
