Media summary

Moloney Architects and FOLAR Architecture + Interiors have thoughtfully reimagined the 1930’s former Bank of New South Wales in Brisbane’s CBD as a contemporary retail destination for Country Road. Guided by principles of longevity, contextual response and enhancement, the design allows heritage elements to remain legible while supporting contemporary retail needs. The project demonstrates the cultural and public value of preservation through adaptive re-use, extending the building’s relevance within Brisbane’s retail landscape.

Occupying the ground and mezzanine levels of the heritage building, the design references the traditional Queenslander house and the warm, earthy tones of the nearby Kangaroo Point cliffs of the Brisbane river. The interior establishes a dialogue between past and present. This is evident in the monumental staircase clad with a timber batten balustrade and the timber veneer used effectively throughout the interior. Original bank counters have been retained and carefully integrated into the store layout.

The design supports how the team works by creating a comfortable, flexible, and inspiring environment. Set within the historic bank building, it blends natural materials and contemporary finishes with the original architecture, giving the space character while still feeling fresh and optimistic.

The layout is designed to adapt to changing workplace needs, supporting staff comfort, ergonomics, and efficient operations, while reflecting the Country Road brand and sustainability goals. Thoughtful lighting, clear circulation, and generous back-of-house amenities improve daily workflows and wellbeing, making it a place staff enjoy and feel proud to work in.
