Traditional lands of the Gadigal people
New South Wales
This first major renewal of the City Recital Hall revitalises Sydney’s premier chamber music venue, expanding its spatial and operational potential to support contemporary performances and events.
The scheme uses stage design techniques—depth-enhancing tones, strategic lighting, and dynamic functional elements—to enable front-of-house spaces throughout the venue to become programmable. A new, custom carpet that references the warm tones of Australian bedrock, extends from the laneway entries, up and throughout the venue, providing a ‘common ground’ identity as an extension of the public domain in this unique urban location.
The upgrades have transformed the multiple foyers from simple circulation into programmable spaces that can each be activated separately and together. Project impact has been demonstrated by a substantial increase contemporary music programming, and events held by commercial and industry partners, in addition to maintaining the venue’s reputation as an exemplary classical music venue.
The renewal of City Recital Hall delivers a theatrical, refined interior transformation with a light touch on budget and our planet. Targeted and considered planning moves transform multiple foyers into spaces that can be activated independently or together. Removable concert hall seating allows for standing audience events and strategic planning of bar areas increase the operating potential of this cultural asset. A dramatic and dark palette creates depth, offset by rich warm tones of earth in soft furnishings. Lighting is reinvented – resulting in a cohesive, dramatic interior whilst avoiding a complete overhaul. An exemplar for doing more with less.
