Media summary

The new Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre is conceived as a vibrant civic destination that reflects Darwin’s climate, culture, and community life. The design combines recreation, wellness, and social connection within a series of open, and highly adaptable spaces that invite participation from all ages and physical abilities. Responding to the tropics, the architecture prioritises shade, ventilation, and permeability, with generous roof forms and breezeways that temper heat while fostering a strong indoor–outdoor relationship.

The centre is organised as a connected village, where pools, fitness, and community functions are unified by clear public spines and activated gathering spaces. Materiality is robust and expressive, drawing on local textures and colours from Larrakia land to ground the project in its context. The facility extends beyond its program to become a place of everyday encounter—supporting health, inclusivity, and social cohesion—while establishing a confident and contemporary contribution to Darwin’s public architecture.

ALA‘s design for City of Darwin’s new aquatic and leisure facility in Casuarina has exceeded our expectations in every respect.
The architecture beautifully reflects the Top End’s tropical climate, natural light, and coastal character, creating spaces that feels authentically Territorian. The integration of shaded structures, breezeways, and locally inspired colours demonstrates both environmental responsiveness and community sensitivity.
Since opening, the centre has become a vibrant community hub, supporting health, recreation, and social connection across all ages. Importantly, this facility has strengthened Council’s
infrastructure portfolio, delivering long-term community value, economic stimulus, and a landmark civic asset we are proud to manage.
