Media summary

Byron CoLab on Arakwal Country has transformed the former Byron Hospital into a vibrant, mixed-use community hub that reflects the values of inclusivity, cultural respect, and sustainability. Commissioned by Byron Shire Council and delivered in collaboration with Social Futures and the Bundjalung of Byron Bay Aboriginal Corporation (Arakwal), the $9.5 million project revitalises a dormant civic asset as a place for health, connection, and community life.

The design, led by BKA Architecture and constructed by Blaze Projects, balances adaptive reuse with cultural expression. A conservation-sensitive colour palette aligns with Byron Bay’s heritage controls, while recycled materials—including timber arbours crafted from Council’s salvaged bridge timbers—reinforce sustainability and local identity. New features include allied health rooms, flexible community offices, a café, and gathering spaces.

Anchored by a yarning circle and indigenous artwork, Byron CoLab celebrates Arakwal culture while future-proofing the precinct as a symbol of resilience, collaboration, and community pride.

The design of the Byron CoLab On Arakwal Country is a refreshing and inspiring reimagining of the old hospital precinct. We have made use of the beautiful high ceilings and abundant natural light to showcase artworks from local artists. The internal courtyard is an oasis of nature; a delightful place to pause and recentre throughout the workday as a respite from screen work. The skylights and sculptural light fixture make our coworking space a hub that organically draws tenants and visitors alike to connect and collaborate.
