Media summary

Bunjil Wellbeing Place is a culturally appropriate and Community focused mixed-use health facility in North Bendigo for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People living on Dja Dja Wurrung Country. It is founded with the knowledge that healing starts the moment you enter an environment where you feel respected and understood. The building form is symmetrical to foster a totemic quality with hovering wing like roof forms and skylit voids making connection to Sky Country above.

The warmth of timber and natural colour permeates the interior, from the generous public welcome area to private consulting spaces – with access to decks with bushland views – and open plan offices beneath the wing like roofs. The principals of environmental, social and economic sustainability are deeply embedded, with energy use reduced by 40%, construction carbon emissions reduced by 21.7%, while 21% of the construction spend was from local suppliers, subcontractors and directly employed staff.

“We wanted a space that feels welcoming, safe, and connected to Country,” said Dallas Widdicombe, BDAC CEO. “This facility is more than a building – it represents a long-term investment in our Community, supporting health, wellbeing, connection, and Culture for generations to come.”

BDAC Board Chairperson Nicola Perry-Peters added, “the opening of our new facility honours the vision and determination of our Elders, our Ancestors, past and present Board members, and our entire Community. Their tireless advocacy, strength, and resilience have brought us from humble beginnings to where we are today. Their legacy continues to inspire us.”
