Bryant Street Residence by Freadman White is a contemporary extension that thoughtfully integrates with its heritage setting in Melbourne’s inner North. The project removes a 1990s addition to restore the original home, exposing its brick structure and bluestone base. A glazed stairwell links the new rear extension, which features a central timber pod housing utility spaces.
Structural elements, such as in-situ concrete columns and an exposed concrete roof, reinforce material honesty. A curved colonnade provides shade and enhances the indoor-outdoor flow through four-meter-high steel-framed pivot doors. The restrained material palette, combining raw concrete and warm timber, balances robustness with refinement.
Discreetly positioned, the addition preserves the home’s street presence while embracing modern living. The project exemplifies a respectful yet ambitious heritage intervention, maintaining a dialogue between past and present. It successfully merges preservation with innovation, demonstrating a seamless blend of historical sensitivity and contemporary architectural clarity.
