The new toilet block, known as the Bread Local Amenities, was built to support and improve the amenity of the growing Bread Local Bakery, which resides in Esperance on the land of the Kepa Kurl Wudjari people. The existing site is hidden among the gum trees on a 1.3-hectare bush block, located 4 kilometres west of the Esperance Town Centre.
The amenities are framed by a low slung, rustic steel structure that sits at ease between the exisitng rainwater tanks and large Bakery storage sheds contained on site. Vertical elements in the steel veranda and spotted gum entry doors, give a nod to the surrounding gum trees and bushland setting. The building is wrapped in white, light filtering polycarbonate cladding, which provides an ample amount of natural light internally and allows the Bread Local Amenities to give off an inviting, gentle glow in the evenings.
Bread Local Amenities is a beautiful small toilet block sitting amongst gum trees, built to support and improve the amenity of the growing Bread Local Bakery, which is located in Esperance.
Humble in its materiality of corrugated sheet, rustic steel and spotted gum doors, the project references memories of the rural farmhouse setting.
Open frame steel veranda above the gravel path frames views of the surrounding trees and offers a waiting outdoor space to the amenities.
Inside the structure is a delightful generous tall volume of space uncommon to amenities, bathed in natural diffused light from polycarbonate cladding in its honest expression of painted timber structure. Highlight windows allow views to trees and welcoming cross ventilation of natural airflow.
The white interior is offset by soft colours of blue and green reminiscent of Esperance’s geography and flora and fauna.
All in all, Bread Local Amenities is a pleasing addition that architecture can offer in enriching a small authentic hospitality experience in the country.
The new toilet block improves the operational running of our existing Bread Local Bakery. Patrons now have a dedicated toilet block and no longer need to use the toilets in our farmhouse and Bakery. The new toilet block will enable us to host larger events and long tables lunches, weddings & other celebrations at our site, expanding our Bakery and catering repertoire. We love the look of the toilets and how they seem to fit in with the site and they look like they have always been there! We have received many complements for our patrons who also enjoy the new toilets!
