New South Wales
Conceived as a tower crafted from a pair of tall slender forms, 88 Walker is a focal point on the North Sydney skyline.
The 2storey former fire station, now heritage pub and 50 storey mixeduse tower narrate the changing storey of North Sydneys growth from early colonial suburb to major commercial destination in the global city of Sydney.
Occupying a very constrained site the design seeks to harmonise its hotel and office functions through a clear diagram and optimisation of each function to create a cohesive, singular slender architectural expression. The ground plane strategy and reworking of the pubs rear laneway access was key to unlocking the functioning of the laneways which will come to define the heart of the CBD.
The design integrates the existing heritage building with, a new 252 room 4.5star hotel and over12,500sqm of boutique commercial office space, to become the tallest building in North Sydney.
88 Walker has been developed to offer a synergy of uses, including a new 252 room 4-star hotel and 23 levels of commercial office space that cantilevers above the refurbished and heritage listed Firehouse hotel. The combination of uses and a street level connection that links to a new laneway precinct has created a vibrant destination that is breathing new life into North Sydney’s commercial district.
The result is a project that’s helping to transform North Sydney into a vibrant 18 hour destination, with a nighttime economy buzzing with laneway bars and restaurants for residents, workers and visitors.
