480 Swan Street is a mixed-use office building, Australia Post’s Support Centre, and a prominent new landmark for Burnley. Located a stone’s throw from Melbourne’s CBD and the MCG, it sits adjacent Burnley railway station. The building is an exercise in robust materiality and it explores tectonics of brick, glass and metalwork in a similarly utilitarian way to the industrial heritage it references. Like these historic factories and warehouses, it aims to provide enduring value by functioning well, while also presenting places which are spatially and materially rich enough to become worthy of attachment from the community. In addition to these ambitions for enduring architectural relevance, its zero-gas, carbon neutral engineering ensures a low impact from the outset. The building’s ground floor provides active retail and connections from street to railway, creating a softened, inviting urban realm on a challenging site where rail, road and the Burnley Street bridge converge.
