Media summary

The Former Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP) Building at 425 Collins Street is an exemplar of research-led restoration. The works have resulted in the retention and repair of the building’s external and internal fabric sympathetic to the original architect’s design and intent. Lovell Chen has been consulting on the building since 1983, providing advice regarding the ongoing maintenance for the façade. This relationship culminated in a conditions assessment in 2018, resulting in the documentation of a comprehensive suite of conservation works in lieu of the pre-existing maintenance regime to extend the building’s life once more, including conservation of the stone and render facades as well as restoration of the 8 lift lobbies.

The stone conservation, reintroduction of missing design elements, render repairs coupled with sensitively integrated façade lighting has rejuvenated the building, and its strong streetscape contribution in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD.

I see the recent conservation works not simply as an act of preservation, but an investment in continuity. For almost a century, the building has formed part of the architectural and commercial fabric of Melbourne’s CBD. By carefully restoring heritage elements and sensitively integrating contemporary requirements, the project allows the building to remain commercially relevant without compromising its character. This balance enables tenants to operate within a space that carries history, craftsmanship, and significance, while supporting modern use. It reinforces the idea that heritage buildings can evolve responsibly, continuing to contribute meaningfully to the city’s cultural and economic life.
