Media summary

The interior architecture of 1 Hotel & Homes Melbourne translates industrial heritage into a contemporary interior architecture. Working within the retained fabric of the heritage-listed Goods Shed No.5, and with design philosophy that foregrounds material memory, spatial layering and connection to nature. More than 2,000 original elements were salvaged and reintegrated, including reclaimed timbers and exposed steel trusses that remain legible within public and private interiors. Robust industrial elements are balanced with tactile finishes, filtered light and biophilic interventions to create calm, materially expressive spaces. Residential interiors adopt a fluid spatial language informed by the movement of the river. Generous glazing, natural material palettes and strong indoor–outdoor connections define living environments, exemplified in the penthouse residences characterised by conservatories, expressive ceilings and expansive terraces. The interior architecture establishes a seamless, relaxed and sophisticated relationship between past, nature and contemporary life.

1 Hotel & Homes Melbourne demonstrates how thoughtful design can renew a significant heritage asset while creating a destination that supports the way people live, work and gather.

FK and One Design Office translated Riverlee’s vision for meaningful urban renewal into a place that balances sustainable luxury with authenticity and community connection.

The adaptive reuse of Goods Shed No.5, combined with biophilic design, reclaimed materials and generous public spaces, creates an environment that enhances wellbeing, fosters connection and celebrates place.

The project strengthens Melbourne’s waterfront and exemplifies Riverlee’s commitment to sustainability, heritage and creating destinations that endure.
