Kim Richards has joined the Institute as the Executive Leader for Queensland, bringing more than 25 years’ experience across architecture, urban development and public policy. A senior executive and former Member of Parliament for Redlands (2017–2024), Kim has led complex organisations through growth, restructure and strategic repositioning, with responsibility for operations, finance, people and culture, and governance. Her background spans leadership roles in several Brisbane architecture practices, complemented by parliamentary committee work across education, skills, the clean economy, transport, and economic governance, giving her deep insight into how planning and built-environment policy is shaped and implemented. Kim is widely regarded for her calm, practical leadership, strong stakeholder relationships, and her commitment to architecture as cultural capital and long-term civic legacy, with interests in housing diversity, well-designed density, and the opportunities and challenges of Queensland’s growth.
She looks forward to working closely with members, government and industry to advocate for sustainable, responsible design outcomes and to ensure the Queensland Chapter remains a visible, influential voice for the profession.
We’re also delighted to welcome Judy Abernethy as Operations Lead for the Queensland Chapter. Judy brings a wealth of experience in governance administration, stakeholder engagement, event management and business development, gained through an impressive career spanning the arts, community and corporate sectors. She has held senior roles across diverse organisations, including more than a decade in business development and partnership management, during which she built strong relationships with government, industry, and community leaders. Judy is well known for her professionalism, creativity and calm approach under pressure — qualities that will strongly support the Institute’s members and activities. Passionate about connecting people and creating efficient, supportive environments, Judy is excited to contribute to the ongoing success and operational strength of the Queensland Chapter.
Kim and Judy join Becky Bonato, Chapter Coordinator, who has been with the Institute for six months and has already developed a strong understanding of chapter needs and formed valued relationships with many members. Becky brings over a decade of administrative and member-focused experience across the education and RTO sectors, with a strong background in front-of-house service, complex diary and meeting coordination, and the smooth running of busy offices, including reception, staff amenities and supplier relationships. She is highly experienced in supporting senior leaders and committees, preparing professional documentation and reports, and maintaining accurate systems for records, budgets and compliance. Becky has coordinated large-scale events, professional learning programs and stakeholder engagement activities, and is passionate about creating positive member experiences and building strong relationships with diverse stakeholders. Known for her calm, solutions-focused approach, she thrives in fast-paced environments and is committed to operational excellence, collaboration and fostering a strong sense of community within the chapter.
You will also see Magdalene St Clare, Conference Manager and Holly, Marketing Coordinator, who are also based in our Brisbane office. We are thrilled to have such a strong and collaborative team working with the Institute.
Please join us in warmly welcoming the new Queensland Chapter team.
