To reinvent a city, you need to reinvent the processes that bring new buildings to fruition. Newcastle East End sets a benchmark for how a collective of architects and local councils can work together to achieve development that is characterful, vibrant, viable and sustainable. The project’s success is palpable from the multiple points of interaction with the architecture.

Whether it be on the street edges where awnings and a laneway guides you to the protected heart of the site, from Christ Church Cathedral at the precipice of the city where you look down onto swathes of newly formed garden terraces or from the iconic view across the harbour that greets ships as they move in and out of the port; Stage 1 of Newcastle East End forms a fitting addition to Newcastle.

Client perspective:
How does the design benefit the way you live/work/play/operate/educate/other?

There are few cities like Newcastle, and equally few opportunities for a developer to reimagine 4 contiguous city blocks in such a unique location.
Stage 1 was critically important in setting the tone for what would follow. The appointment of a group of renown architects to collaborate and deliver Iris Capital’s vision for 28,000 m2 of residential, hotel and retail was essential.
With rejuvenation and restoration at its core, the 212 apartments in Stage 1 were designed to retain key heritage elements, producing a village atmosphere that respects the past, giving the impression that the buildings have always been there.
