Alexander & Albemarle is an adaptive reuse project with a focus on sustainable alternatives to new builds. The embodied energy of this project is significantly lower than that of a new build.

The buildings were constructed in the 1960s as Commonwealth Government office accommodation, and this project has seen them transformed into a mixed-use precinct that includes retail, commercial, childcare, residential, hospitality, and health and wellbeing. The project ensures the unique heritage features are preserved and celebrated while providing contemporary functionality.

Prior to the redevelopment of Alexander & Albemarle, the buildings had sat vacant for more than 10 years and had become very rundown. Now, the new precinct has become an anchor point in the rejuvenation of the Woden community, and an exemplar of the importance of preserving heritage buildings in our city.

Client perspective:
How does the design benefit the way you live/work/play/operate/educate/other?

This was an experiment in testing the benefits of adaptive reuse in Canberra. The outcome of the decision to adapt A&A, rather demolish and rebuild, has been very impressive in terms of the offering to the Woden community as well as the environmentally sustainable approach. The simple approach to repurposing the spaces also ensured the work remained within budget.

The amenities and services are extremely high quality; they would not have been improved by doing a new build. It has been a rewarding opportunity to maintain a piece of Woden’s history for the community to appreciate.
