The Lady Lamington building is the earliest surviving nurses’ quarters in Queensland. Located in the state heritage listed Brisbane General Hospital Precinct, Lady Lamington was constructed in five stages between 1896 and 1938 to provide onsite accommodation for nursing and training staff. Nettletontribe’s design reinvigorates Lady Lamington, bringing life back to a building that holds a rich history by preserving the heritage significance and providing the functional requirements of the new use. The sensitive and selective design response connects the ground plane through a discreet intervention and reinstates the iconic wrap around verandahs, timber railing and ornate fretwork whilst incorporating contemporary building requirements. Driven by the Lady Lamington Nurses’ Home Conservation Management Plan and guided by the principles of the Burra Charter the works to Lady Lamington have ensured the conservation of one of Queensland’s most significant buildings.
Lady Lamington had been the nurses’ accommodation from 1896 to as recently as the 1990s making it a memorable building in the hearts and minds of many health care professionals and neighbouring residents.
The design modifications and conservation work reflect an appreciation for the significance of the heritage place. Lady Lamington is now being experienced by the next generation of students.
Since the new works were completed, the building has contributed significantly to the vibrant urban fabric of the greater Herston Quarter redevelopment and brought new life to the building and surrounding precinct ensuring its longevity for decades to come.
