The Kingsley College Project is a transformative educational development in Rockhampton, Queensland, designed to enhance learning for primary students. Situated along the Fitzroy River and bordered by busy roads, the school overcomes site challenges such as flooding and noise with elevated, acoustically sensitive architecture. The design focuses on affordability, utilizing standard materials and construction methods while elevating the learning environment. The result is a striking yet harmonious building that stands out in the community, offering privacy for students through thoughtful screening and panels. The project preserves a large heritage tree and integrates a nearby natural park, creating a seamless connection between the built and natural environments. Flexible indoor spaces extend into outdoor learning areas, promoting adaptability and collaboration. The building’s design has led to a noticeable improvement in student behaviour and engagement, reflecting the successful collaboration between the school and architectural team over the past five years.
The project has transformed teaching and learning.
The learning spaces have opened up a world of learning opportunities, with space for sitting on the carpet, reading nooks, outdoor learning spaces and nature play.
The building’s connection to nature, nestled into our historic tree, is a notable feature, not just for aesthetics, but improving student wellbeing.
One of the most astounding differences that was not expected, was the dramatic reduction in behaviour referrals. With students focussed, calm, engaging in their learning more in a variety of ways, we believe that there will be a significant increase in academic outcomes over time.Client perspective
