Located in the heart of Byron, renowned for its vibrant culture and landscapes, Hotel Marvell stands as a boutique sanctuary with 24 rooms. Situated between Marvell Street and Marvell Lane, its design incorporates a double-height ‘laneway’ through the site, allowing a new public hangout and passage through the development. Lush vegetation hangs through the laneway, adding to the pursuit of ’Tropical Brutalism’. Strong Concrete detailing and warm robust rendered surfaces add warmth to the palette. the hotel is an oasis that merges the public and private realms to create connections between hotel guests and locals enjoying the space. Its rooftop consists of both a bar and a pool that provides a unique perspective on the coastal landscape.
Hotel Marvell delivers a welcoming and warm hotel experience while integrating with and enhancing the fine-grain character of Byron Bay.
Emulating nearby arcades, which allow locals to wander through sites rather than traverse whole blocks, guests are drawn into a generous laneway. This covered, verdant, double-height space serves as a forecourt to the hotel lobby, provides external dining spaces for the adjacent restaurant, and offers an all-weather space for locals and guests to socialise or work.
Eschewing the stereotypical white-on-white-on-beige colour scheme that has become almost de rigueur for coastal NSW, Hotel Marvell embraces an earthy palette that is more truly reflective of the diverse character of its setting. Three distinct room types offer a variety of experiences and cater to a range of occupants.
A generous contribution to the community, Marvell sets a high bar for future development in central Byron.
Being our first hotel we had top learn on the go. HGA Studio pushed our thinking and allowed a greater public interface in ato the site. By creating a pedestrian lane through the site we got more activity, a surprising event space, and lot more locals hanging around having a beer and a snack. We are proud of the collaboration wth all involved and are loving to see people enjoy this new offering in the bay.
