Danthonia Passive House, named for the kneed wallaby grass found on the property in Riddells Creek, provides inspiration to many needlessly suffering Macedon Ranges residences, proving a home doesn’t have to freeze in winter or boil in summer. Architectural and Passivhaus solutions merge to create a home that is comfortable and exciting to live in and maintains its internal temperature and air quality all year round.
The design takes ideals of a rural Australian homes with a connection to its location and landscape and blends them seamlessly with striking design, low maintenance yet high performance sustainability. It’s the small things, window seats, feature bookshelves, a daybed, creeping vines and a private fernery mixed with the big- large triple glazed windows allowing warmth from daylight and views, spacious but economically sized rooms and a hidden but perfectly functioning and calculated envelope that combine to provide maximum wellbeing for the occupants.
The peace and quiet and stable temperature in our new house have definitely contributed to an improvement in our general well-being. We love living here and we hate to leave – even to go on holidays! We also enjoy a warm glow of satisfaction from having very low to negligible power bills and knowing we built a unique house with low environmental impact that will stand for a very long time: sparking joy and pleasure to all who live here.
