This heritage-listed home, designed by renowned architect Edward Buchanan, showcases Sydney’s late colonial era. Buchanan’s influence is evident in the fine metalwork, stilted arches and elaborate plaster detailing.
A double-height atrium, the centerpiece of the additions, opens the rear of the house to light and air whilst connecting previously disjointed living areas. The new additions echo the original lacework, with delicate steel columns and arches supporting numerous hanging gardens that create a sense of lush ornamentation. Hand-painted steelwork provides a soft and calm patina whilst suspended double-glazed doors expand the homes living spaces into the garden.
The original building has been meticulously restored, including the cast-iron lacework, marble fireplaces and timber detailing throughout. Where needed, new additions have been sympathetically incorporated, including new bathrooms, robes, kitchen and storage. Overall, the project integrates the entire property and garden, creating a cohesive family setting while preserving the home’s historical character.
