Adam Swinburn | 2022 David Lindner Prize Winner

The 2022 David Lindner Prize is awarded to Adam for his submission entitled “A Reference Scheme for a Future Urban Australian School”.

This winning submission builds on previous in-depth research by Adam into the urban school typology.

In awarding the prize, the jury noted that the proposal was highly topical. It is anticipated that the Reference Scheme will benefit architects, school administrations and government officials alike by providing a holistic way of thinking about school design that can be incorporated into future school developments.

Inner East High School: A Reference Scheme for a Future Urban Australian School

Changes in demographics, land economics, and densification have put pressure on traditional low-rise school development models, as they are no longer obtainable and are not financially viable for urban sites.

Currently, Schools Infrastructure NSW is investigating innovative integrated models of school development to access desirable land holdings and deliver new urban schools placed at the heart of communities.

‘A Reference Scheme for a Future Urban Australian School’ distils the author’s decade-long urban school research and tests current school development thinking into a singular, elegant, and considered vision for a new 1,320 student-populated public secondary school at Edgecliff, NSW. The scheme’s ambition, at its core, prioritises our youngest members of society at the forefront of city-making.

Edgecliff Centre brings together a social and commercial aspiration for the urban research study and is appropriate for investigation. It has the potential to improve the commercial viability, public benefit, and social license of Edgecliff Centre while addressing a community demand for a new public school.
