What's on

Books on Architecture

Architext bookstores supplied specialist books on architecture to Australian Architects and designers for over 30 years and the news of its closure in December 2015 was received with great sadness by Institute members and the wider design community.

Since the opening of the first store in Melbourne in the early 1980’s and following that a store in Sydney,
Architext grew a strong and loyal support. Architext was one of few specialist Australian bookstores that, at the time, made available a long-desired quality and breadth of literature on architects and architecture worldwide. Since the advent of the internet and the growth of online bookstores, Architext continued to operate successfully, however it was ultimately the highly competitive retail environment that led to the unfortunate closure of the Institute’s beloved bookstores.

In recognition of the importance of architectural books both as an inspiration and as an essential tool for the practice and appreciation of architecture, the Institute has sought out alternative suppliers that we believe come close to meeting the high standard previously set by Architext. All of these stores have both a physical and online presence with extensive catalogues of architectural and built environment titles. Between them we trust that you will find what you are looking for. For the more obscure or rare titles feel free to contact the recommended stores to place a special order.

Boffins Books in Perth, Folio Books in Brisbane, Metropolis in Melbourne and Published Art in Sydney, are all longstanding specialist bookstores with a genuine focus on art and design.

Each of the participating stores have also generously agreed to offer Institute members the same 10% discount previously available to members through purchases from Architext. And, what’s great for members without a participating bricks-and-mortar store nearby, is that they can access the online services of any of the four bookstores offering the same great discount.

Metropolis has been operating in Melbourne since 1993, firstly in St Kilda and then in Curtin House on Swanston Street, Melbourne since 2004.  The close proximity of this CBD location to Architext meant that we only carried a select range of architecture books. Since the closure of the iconic Architext bookstore we have expanded this range and look forward to it continuing to grow into the future. In addition to architecture our focus is in the fields of modern and contemporary art, design, film, fashion and photography. We also carry a curated selection of fiction and non-fiction, graphic novels, popular culture, music, cooking and children’s titles. Special customer orders are welcomed and procured from a number of local and international distributors.

We are dedicated and passionate about selling books and enjoy a loyal customer base of students, professionals, libraries and book lovers.

We look forward to meeting members of the Institute and assisting them with their requirements.
