Touchy, Feely, Tasty Architecture: 2020 Griffin Lecture
The ACT Chapter is delighted that Kevin McCloud MBE will deliver the prestigious 2020 Griffin Lecture, ‘Touchy, Feely, Tasty Architecture’ on Monday 24 February at the National Press Club in Canberra.
Since its first delivery in Canberra in 1961, the Griffin Lecture (named in honour of Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin) has addressed the big issues in architecture and design. The Lecture is proudly supported by GHDWoodhead.
Kevin is best known for the internationally acclaimed series GRAND DESIGNS, first aired on Channel 4 and now in its 20th year of broadcast.

Regular meeting – Minister for Planning
The ACT Chapter continues to meet regularly with the Minister for Planning and Land Management Mick Gentleman MLA highlighting issues such as the delay in processing of development applications and red tape reduction including an e-development platform, RZ1 and the Territory Plan, combustible cladding, adaptive re-use and the Australian War Memorial redevelopment and planned demolition of Anzac Hall.
Australian War Memorial Redevelopment
The ACT Chapter President Philip Leeson and President-Elect Shannon Battisson attended the Australian War Memorial’s public consultations regarding the redevelopment project in November 2019 and expressed concern regarding the process and required need for the demolition of Anzac Hall. The following day these concerns were discussed in depth with the AWM Redevelopment Team at a meeting at the ACT Chapter including concerns about limited public consultations. Philip Leeson was also interviewed by ABC radio 666.
Australian Capital Territory 10 Year Infrastructure Plan
Through the Built Environment Coalition, the ACT Chapter provided feedback to the ACT Government in advance of the release of its 10 Year Infrastructure Plan. Chapter Councillor Jane Cassidy and Executive Director Liz Lang attended the launch of the plan by ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr MLA. The ACT Chapter issued a supportive statement including that our members look forward to contributing their professional expertise to projects such as the design and development of new schools at Throsby, Kenny, Denman Prospect, the redevelopment of the Canberra Theatre and the replacement of the CIT Reid campus.
Design Canberra
Throughout November 2019 the ACT Chapter was involved in Design Canberra which is a festival celebrating design excellence including an Open House at the ACT Chapter, architect-led walking tours, and a Music in Architecture event.
Australian Building Code Board (ABCB) – Construction Code Consultation
In December, the Australian Building Codes Board gave a presentation to members regarding the direction given by nine governments (federal and state) to the ABCB in relation to the construction code.
End of Year Celebrations
Institute members and guests attended the ACT Chapter Christmas party at the end of December 2019 including the Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury MLA and Caroline Le Couteur MLA
