The Australian Institute of Architects commends the acknowledgement of three esteemed built environment professionals in this week’s King’s Birthday Honours List.
Lindsay Johnston and Mary Patricia Marsland were recognised as Members of the Order of Australia, while Orwell Phillips received the Officer of the Order of Australia award.
The honours note the significant service to architecture from the trio.
South Australian Mary Patricia Marsland PSM was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for her significant service to architecture in a range of roles.
These included as Chair of the Construction Industry Training Board from 2004 to 2014, Chair of the South Australian Housing Trust Board of Management from 2006 to 2011, and a Director of Access 2 Place throughout the 2010s.
Ms Marsland has also served on a number of boards across the property industry and not-for-profits, such as Croquet Australia and government roles with the Outback Communities Authority, South Australian Heritage Council and Adelaide Parklands Authority.
Mr Orwell Phillips, from Sydney, was cited for his distinguished service to heritage conservation, architecture and professional organisations.
Of note was his service to the International Council on Monuments and Sites, on which he served as Secretary-General between 2017 and 2020, and as its International Vice President from 2014 to 2017.
Mr Phillips is a Life Fellow of the Institute. He has contributed on a number of committees and review panels contributing to the heritage and architecture of Sydney.
New South Wales-based Mr Lindsay Johnston was nominated for his work in architecture and design education, including more than two decades with the Oz.E.Tecture Architecture Foundation Australia the University of Newcastle and with the Institute.
Mr Johnston was awarded the New South Wales Premier’s Award in the Royal Australian Institute of Architects awards in 2000, among other awards.
