Stephen Hoffman (1956 - 2020)

It is with a very heavy heart that we advise of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Stephen Hoffman. Steve or Hoffy as he was more commonly known, graduated from W.A.I T. (Curtin University) in 1979, working after graduation with Tony Brand at Forbes and Fitzharding and then with Pat Pinder, first at the earliest iteration of Hassel and Partners in Perth and then later at what had by then morphed into Pinder and Associates. He worked alongside Pat for nearly 15 years, before going out on his own in 1995.

For the last 25 years at Hoffman Architecture, he has worked in close partnership with Gordon Purvis, forging a successful practice around residential, commercial and government work, which has included many regional police stations, civic facilities and health clinics. He has in that time, designed and completed many fine buildings. As a “dyed in the wool” West Australian, his designs have always had a vernacular sensibility and a unique relationship to place that only comes from a deep understanding of your hometown’s vagaries and peculiarities.

Steve was a creative force, very perceptive and annoyingly at times, egocentric and headstrong, but that arguably is fertile ground for a good architect and he indeed was that! He was also importantly a loving father and a loyal friend. He will be missed by many – his family, his loved ones, his friends and his colleagues.

R.I.P. Hoffy.
