Media summary

The Waterford Learning Centre creates a contemporary learning environment on a tight urban site at St Pius X College. The two‑storey building provides nine new learning spaces and a covered outdoor learning area, responding to an immediate shortage of teaching rooms while setting a clear direction for future campus renewal.

At the heart of the building is a sheltered outdoor learning space. Rather than a separate structure, it is located within the building itself. Positioned alongside classrooms, it is used daily for breakout learning, small group work, informal study and circulation. Open at both ends and covered by a ventilated skillion roof, the space allows airflow while providing shade and weather protection, making it comfortable and easy to supervise throughout the day.

Classrooms support flexible teaching, operating independently or combining into larger learning areas. The building addresses Anderson Street through pitched gables, a residential scale and red face brick.

The Waterford Learning Centre at St Pius X College Chatswood is a purpose-built hub for the Junior School, serving 225 Year 5 and 6 students and staff. Designed to support contemporary pedagogy, the Centre features flexible, open learning spaces with movable walls that encourage collaboration, adaptability, and student engagement. Its open-air design seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor environments, creating a dynamic and inspiring learning setting. Architecturally considered and highly versatile, the building is designed to evolve over time, allowing it to be reconfigured for use by a range of cohorts in future years.
