New South Wales
The St George Sailing Club is a community institution. Established in 1897, it is one of the oldest sailing clubs in Australia.
The new club presents a significant public asset, serving the diverse local community of South Sydney, a locality poorly served. It represents a commitment to the local community, creating a precedent for future like-projects.
It’s a skiff club – small boats, accessible to a broad demographic. It’s a not-for-profit that promotes sailing. It receives no government funding and is run by volunteers.
The project represents a substantial reinvention of the club. It provides a new public space, it links the beachfronts at either side, it’s accessible, naturally ventilated, simple and direct. It pays tribute to the old wharf buildings and boatsheds of Sydney and stands as a contemporary reinterpretation of the type.
The club hosted the International Moth Championships in mid-January and has welcomed 120,000 visitors since September 2023.
On the first day of opening, we signed up 600 members to the new club. We now have 15,000 members.
In the first 5 months of opening we have had more than 120,000 visitors – an increase of patrons from 2,500 to 24,000 per month.
The new club represents a new lease of life for the club and its operations. It’s universally appreciated – an enormous contribution to the locality. We’re now looking into other ways to extend our services for the community.
On sailing, in mid-January, we hosted the International Moth Championships. We’re looking forward to future events.
