Media summary

This house sits within a grove of cabbage tree palms, at the end of a leafy valley.

It enjoys the brightness and vigour of the nearby beach, but is also a place to contemplate stillness, rainfall and absence of light.

The house is ordered around a tall central living space.
The room extends out over a dry creek bed, onto a terrace.
Glass corners make the room feel like it’s floating in the garden.

Big doors allow the house to be opened-up and connected, or made compact.
Windows take warm sun through the palm fronds and chilled air from the neighbouring forest.

Materials are tactile and intimate.
Vertical textures and dark timber are repeated in tribute to the vegetation.
Wild wallpaper is revealed at the most intimate places.
Lighting is focussed on the spot it needs to be, or concealed to be intimate and warm.

The outlook to our gardens is incredible. The sliding doors literally connect the garden and give our home its soul.
It’s beautifully curated but we’re never protective, it has real function.

There are so many little delights, from floor to ceiling windows that reveal entirely new aspects, to our hidden powder room, to the beautiful surprise reveal of wallpapered bedrooms.

Perhaps the simplest and unforeseen delight is, despite being a beach house, our favourite time is bunkering down and being immersed in the incredible feel and sounds of the house when the rain arrives and our delightful rain chains flow.
