The project is a renovation of a 1985 cavity brick unit building with two units, one atop the other. The brief was to amalgamate the units into a coastal home which makes the most of the location, subtropical climate, and seaside ambiance. Sited in one of the most desirable climates in the world, the driving philosophy behind the design was to provide a very flexible envelope which can allow the dwelling to be generously opened to the environment, or transformed into a more practical, introverted, closed-down mode. The everchanging sliding/ folding facade is a form of kinetic sculpture in the streetscape. The resultant structure works effectively as a small operable machine that can be extensively manipulated to keep the occupants comfortable without artificial climate controls. Further, the variable facade allows the building to offer a spectrum of intoverted to extroverted modes of privacy, and accommodation of all weather conditions.
The home prioritizes functionality, beauty, and comfort. The open design encourages fluid movement and social interaction. An abundance of natural light creates a feeling of continuity between indoor and outdoor living inviting a relaxed, open lifestyle.
We love how the darker interior provokes a feeling of intimacy and warmth while the high ceilings contribute to a sense of openness and freedom.
The concrete façade gives the home its robust, solid presence while the timber screens introduce a harmonious fusion of materials, earthy and contemporary. It feels amazing to live in a home that goes beyond what we could have imagined.
