Located in Northcote, this thoughtful renovation and extension transforms a modest Californian bungalow into a light-filled, adaptable home for a family of five. Responding to the demands of everyday life, the design creates a sequence of interconnected spaces that balance openness with spatial definition — from a generous kitchen at the heart of the home to quieter living areas that offer retreat without isolation.
An existing unsympathetic addition was removed to make way for a new single-storey extension and central courtyard that bring northern light deep into the plan. Carefully placed clerestory windows, skylights and a consistent interior datum enhance daylight while mitigating the presence of surrounding two-storey neighbours.
A warm, durable palette of brick, timber and muted greens lends a timeless quality, while passive design strategies — improved orientation, natural ventilation and thermal mass — support comfort and sustainability. The result is a resilient family home that quietly enriches its suburban context.
P12's design has perfectly responded to the brief
On a recent 43 degree days the house has remained very comfortable from the design that blocks out the harsh summer sun and insulates from the outdoor temperatures, all while still allowing natural light to flood in.
We love the connection to the outdoors, whether we're in the lounge, the kitchen, or the dining area, we love the experience of being surrounded by greenery. We also love the practicality and functionality of the design. Every detail is considered and this provides an incredible living experience – everything just works.
