Media summary

Landing Bakery uses a working hospitality venue to test how circular and renewable design performs under real commercial conditions. Located in the Brisbane bayside suburb of Scarborough, the front-of-house fit out was designed and fabricated by Five Mile Radius with Matthew Reynolds, using local supply chains, active salvage streams and renewable materials identified before design commenced.

The project features sand-cast concrete formed with sand sourced across the bay, Queensland-grown hoop pine, recycled steel and a repurposed spinnaker sail, with all furniture fabricated locally from reclaimed and renewable materials. An outdoor gathering space extends the fit-out into the street, remaining usable outside trading hours. Project-specific carbon accounting shows an 84 percent reduction in embodied carbon compared to a typical hospitality fit-out.

We came to the project looking for a high quality design outcome that would work hard for the way the bakery operates. What we gained through the process was a much deeper understanding of how local and reused materials could be used without compromising on aesthetics, durability or function. The fit-out is practical, well resolved and closely aligned with our values, and our customers have responded positively to the space. We also appreciate how the project helps educate customers about where materials come from, without making sustainability feel heavy-handed.
