The Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat has been reimagined after the devastating 2019 bushfires, transforming loss into renewal. Once a cherished wedding venue, the retreat has been rebuilt to strengthen its role as a cultural and economic landmark in the region.
Edmiston Jones’ design responds to the dramatic bushland setting with buildings that are robust, fire-resistant, and recessive in tone, allowing the natural landscape to remain the hero. The renewed venue includes a function centre, nine accommodation cabins, the Alfresco pavilion, and dedicated bridal and groom suites. Spaces are carefully arranged around the central dam and natural landmarks, ensuring ceremonies and gatherings are grounded in place.
Collaboration with EJ’s landscape architects and interior designers ensured architecture, interiors and landscape are seamlessly integrated. Durable materials, efficient planning, and restrained detailing deliver long-term value while providing guests with a rich and memorable experience that honours resilience, celebration, and connection to Country.
As owners of the retreat, the design allows us to make the most of the site while still keeping the landscape and Rock Cathedral as the main attraction. We can now comfortably host weddings of all sizes, with connected pathways ensuring every guest feels welcome and included. The simple, elegant buildings blend into the surroundings without distraction, while the multifunctional spaces, especially the function centre kitchen, give us flexibility in how we operate. Sustainable initiatives and durable, bushfire-compliant materials mean we can focus on providing memorable experiences, knowing the retreat is efficient, resilient, and easy to maintain.
