Sydney-based Klaus Carson Studio has unveiled Ironbark House, a coastal farmhouse on New South Wales’ South Coast that transforms the constraints of a bushfire-prone escarpment into a framework for innovation. Conceived with quiet strength and material sensitivity, the home embraces resilience, restraint, and a deep connection to place.
Clad in corrugated Zincalume, the compact form captures shifting coastal light, while locally sourced spotted gum and sandstone – excavated directly from the site – anchor the dwelling with warmth and permanence. These robust yet tactile materials were chosen not only for durability but for how they will weather gracefully over time.
Internally, spaces are calm and elemental, opening to long views while reinforcing a sense of shelter.
Every detail is guided by durability and environmental sensitivity, resulting in a home that feels inevitable in its setting: humble, enduring, and quietly confident in its dialogue with land and sea.
Living in Ironbark House has completely changed how we use and enjoy our home. The design feels open yet sheltered, letting us soak up the views and coastal light while staying comfortable and protected. The materials and layout make day-to-day life easy, and the flow between indoors and outdoors encourages both relaxing and entertaining. It’s a home that just works for how we live — calm, practical, and connected to the landscape.
