The interior refurbishment of the Hopgood Theatre revitalises the well-loved venue as a contemporary, inclusive cultural asset for the southern suburbs. Grieve Gillett Architects delivered a sensitive renewal that celebrates the theatre’s 1980s architecture while significantly improving comfort, accessibility and technical performance. 

A clear narrative journey guides visitors from the busy civic precinct into an immersive theatre environment. Echoing the drama and vibrancy of the stage, colour cues and directional lighting build anticipation, intensifying as audiences are drawn into the auditorium. 

Original face brickwork, dance floor and tubular lighting were retained as markers of identity, while targeted upgrades elevate functionality. The refreshed foyer, bar and mezzanine now offer generous seating, complemented by angled carpet patterns and folded signage referencing the building’s geometry. 

Universal access improvements, an upgraded auditorium and a flexible secondary performance space collectively strengthen the theatre’s capacity to welcome audiences, artists and community for years ahead.
