Hopgood Theatre Refurbishment | Grieve Gillett Architects

The refurbishment of the Hopgood Theatre has revitalised Southern Adelaide’s only major performing arts venue, securing its future as a vibrant cultural hub for the region. First opened in 1985 and later threatened with closure, the theatre was saved through passionate community advocacy and support from the City of Onkaparinga and Country Arts SA. 

Grieve Gillett Architects’ redesign brings the much-loved facility up to contemporary standards, dramatically improving accessibility, comfort and performance capability. Illuminated signage, wayfinding and public realm upgrades strengthen the theatre’s civic interface. Inside, a refreshed foyer, bold new colour and lighting create a sense of drama from arrival. 

New auditorium seating, acoustic improvements and modernised lighting and sound systems elevate performance quality. An underused lecture theatre has been transformed into an intimate performance and rehearsal space, completing the transformation of the Hopgood Theatre as a flexible and contemporary venue for community, schools, local acts and touring performances.
