Hopetoun Residence | Freadman White

Hopetoun Street Residence is a thoughtful alteration and addition to a Victorian home, preserving its streetscape while introducing an unassuming rear extension. The design prioritises spatial generosity within a constrained site, using strategic interventions to create flexibility of use and moments of delight and whimsy.

A curated entry sequence leads visitors through the heritage structure to a double-height, light-filled addition centred around a swimming pool—an homage to the client’s childhood memories. The pool becomes the home’s focal point, offering dynamic reflections and a serene outlook from the kitchen and upper level.

Small yet meaningful details, like an arched staircase window framing the surrounding chimneys, reinforce a connection to place. A sunken living area enhances volume perception, while the dining space seamlessly extends outdoors. Original Victorian features are preserved, blending heritage with contemporary elements. This project exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a constrained site into a harmonious, immersive living experience.
