Media summary

Emoji House is a contemporary family home in Keperra, Brisbane, designed as a thoughtful response to community, context, and climate. Shaped by the clients’ desire to maintain strong connections with their neighbours, the project engages the street through a welcoming yet private frontage, using a translucent screen to balance openness and retreat while contributing positively to the streetscape.

Referencing the modest scale and character of the surrounding 1950s post-war homes, the house sits comfortably within its neighbourhood while clearly expressing a contemporary identity. Internally, the layout prioritises light, ventilation, and everyday connection to the outdoors, creating a comfortable and adaptable environment for family life.

Passive design strategies were embedded from the outset, reducing reliance on mechanical systems and enhancing long-term sustainability. Playful in spirit yet disciplined in execution, Emoji House demonstrates how residential architecture can be socially generous, environmentally responsive, and quietly distinctive within its suburban setting.

“The house is absolutely beautiful, and it’s exactly what we wanted. From the very beginning, Reddog collaborated with us and listened. They asked the right questions and moved at the right speed through the process, not too fast, not too slow. They consulted with us on decisions, and when we left it with them to make the right choice, they did so. After living in the house for a month – people ask me if there’s anything I’ve seen so far that I regret, or would change… there is nothing.”
