Media summary

Cloud 9 reimagines a 1980s restaurant and public facility at the top of Halley’s Comet chairlift in Falls Creek. The renovation, undertaken over three summer construction seasons, increases accessibility and year-round useability for guests and visiting public alike in this highly exposed alpine location. In winter all visitors to the ski fields pass through this point, and the building provides public facilities and shelter for people with a wide range of ages and experience levels.

The entry sequence has been redesigned with a new fully accessible deck elevated to match the winter snow level. The northern terrace, dining room and interior spaces face towards a dramatic view of Mt Spion Kopje, with the roof profile allowing deep sunlight penetration during winter and providing a sheltered space out of the wind. The design response strikes a balance between exposure and protection to allow use in a wide range of weather conditions.

The re-design of Cloud 9 has completely transformed the operation and functionality of a very old and outdated food and beverage venue. The design has enhanced the guest and staff experience through improved flow of traffic, speed of delivery and of course ambience. With clever expansion of windows, an abundance of light floods the entire building, bringing a lightness never experienced before. In turn, views of the mountains and surrounding terrain appear magnified. The iconic Cloud 9 has been brought back to life with hints of European finesse, but it ultimately says this is Australian alpine design at its best.
