Windsor Knight Group commissioned TRCB to design an expansion and refurbishment of the Angelo Street shopping centre, anchored by WA’s first Coles Local supermarket. Situated at the heart of South Perth, the project was informed by the core ideas of ‘championing local’ and ‘integration in place’.
The refashioned street façade is a nod to South Perth’s and Como’s celebrated art deco and ‘moderne’ architecture, while a sculptural veil of 500 aluminium pieces – each cut, shaped, and powder-coated – is conceived and arranged to evoke the white caps of the nearby river.
A key design element is the landscaped courtyard garden around the retained jacaranda tree. Offering a convivial community meeting place adjacent to and accessible from the street, the courtyard encourages social engagement, inclusively and equitably.
The result is an integrated and commercially successful neighbourhood centre where locals feel at home.
From the Owners perspective, the design by TRCB has enabled the expansion of a very small, and somewhat inadequate, neighbourhood shopping centre into a full line supermarket plus several new speciality shops.
The design has paid respect to an existing mature jacaranda tree and created a beautiful piazza which the local’s community have embraced enthusiastically.Client perspective
