The voice of
Australian Architecture

Since 1929, the Australian Institute of Architects has been the voice, the standard, and the backbone of the architecture profession. We represent more than 14,000 members; from the studios of Australia’s most celebrated practices to sole practitioners in regional towns, from students in their first year of design school to Fellows whose work has shaped the country’s skyline.

The best minds in Australian architecture are in this room. The question is whether you are too.

Who we are

The profession’s voice

When governments draft building legislation, rewrite procurement rules, tighten safety regulations, or debate housing policy, someone has to represent architects. That’s us. We’ve been at the centre of most major regulatory reform affecting the profession, from the National Construction Code to the NSW Design and Building Practitioners Act. We don’t just submit papers. We sit at the table, we push for change, and we make sure the profession is heard. Your membership makes that possible.

The profession’s standard

We run one of the most prestigious architecture awards program in the country, culminating in national recognition that shapes careers and opens doors. We set the ethical and practice standards that members commit to uphold. And we give architects the tools to meet those standards: practice guidance, professional development, contracts, and resources built by architects, for architects.

The profession’s community

14,000 members is not a mailing list. It’s a community of people who understand the work because they do it. Collaboration across the country. Mentoring that pairs emerging architects with experienced practitioners. Student networks that start building your professional world before you graduate. A connection to peers, leaders, and advocates at every stage of your career. Architecture can be isolating but it is not when you’re with us.

Meeting you where you are

If you’re a registered architect,

this is your professional home. The practice library that senior architects swear by. Building contracts trusted across the industry, at member rates. Professional development that actually counts toward your CPD requirements. Your name in the national directory. Eligibility for the awards program. And the post-nominals that signal to clients and peers that you practise at the highest standard.

→ Architect membership

If you run a practice,

you already know that investing in your team pays for itself. Our practice-level membership gives every staff member access to Australian Standards, practice resources, and professional development  at a lower per-person cost than individual membership. It’s a professional development strategy and a competitive advantage in one subscription.

→ Practice membership

If you’ve recently graduated,

this is where you find your footing. A network of graduates and emerging architects going through the same thing you are. Preparation and support for your registration examination. Mentoring. And a community that doesn’t disappear after you throw your hat in the air.

→ Graduate membership

If you’re studying architecture,

you’ll benefit from joining our student network because the professional community you build now is the one that carries you through your career. Programs that put your work in front of national juries. Mentoring from practising architects. Events where you meet people from other schools in the country. And resources to help you navigate the transition from university to practice when the time comes.

→ Student membership

If your circumstances have changed,

you’ve stepped away from practice, you’re on parental leave, you’re working part-time, or you’re exploring a different path, there’s a way to stay connected without starting from scratch. Concessional rates keep you in the community, with access to the resources and networks that matter when you’re ready to come back.

→ Associate membership

If you work in the built environment but aren’t an architect,

you’re still part of this world. Our affiliate membership connects you to the architecture community through events, professional development, and industry networks.

Still not convinced?

The industry is moving through the most significant regulatory shift in a generation. Building legislation, CPD requirements, housing policy, sustainability targets – the ground is shifting under the profession. The architects who are inside the Institute are shaping what comes next. The ones outside it are reacting to it.

But don’t just take our word for it, hear what some of our members have to say:

“It’s advocacy role is a really important one, and I think most architects like advocating for design equity and lots of issues, so it’s a good forum”

- Mid-Career

“It’s there to help protect architects, as well as celebrate our achievements, and potentially tell society more about what architects do”

- Women in Practice

“It functions as a community for support and regulation, inviting those interested in architecture to join”

- Graduate

“The Institute also provides technical notes that underpin practice and provide a consistency of where we put our expertise”

- Mid Career

“A support body for architects, emphasising social networking and a resource for business advice”

- Emerging

“A support system for anyone in the fraternity, providing services like a body people can turn to”

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. Four quarterly payments on all categories except Student.

Can my employer pay?

Yes. Forward your invoice, or ask about practice membership which covers your whole team.

I used to be a member. How do I come back?
