2021 Western Australia Architecture Awards: residential architecture - houses (new)

City Beach Residence 1 | Hillam Architects

“This City Beach residence is the result of an extensive and very collaborative approach with our clients. Featuring two storeys and a basement level wine cellar and store cut into the existing site, we deliberately located the house to minimise earthworks. The brief required a highly versatile family home that provided light filled spaces for an active, growing family to flourish. The client required a home that provided sufficient privacy from the street front and neighboring properties without compromising light and space.

The client is passionate about a healthy living, fitness and martial arts after spending earlier years in Japan so extensive space was given up to a large gym and ‘dojo’ room with private garden. Upstairs, views to the adjacent park and Rottnest Island are captured where the main living area spills seamlessly to outdoor entertaining areas that step down to the pool deck. A bedroom wing carefully separates the master suite from the children’s’ room with subtle geometry.

Conceptually, the home blends Japanese & modernist-era influences with a restrained palette to create an uncompromising yet versatile family home . Featuring white perforated-metal cladding, the front façade has a series of automated folding screens control privacy and light to the street front. At night, the perforations allow light to penetrate through, transforming the residence into a warm, glowing lantern. A short winding walk through lush vegetation leads to the dramatic double height canopy that frames the entry.

Landscape and planting has been chosen to contrast against some of the austere architecture, softening the elevations and entry experience while providing natural screens against the neighboring properties. A restrained interior palette is also softened by warmer tones of timber against the natural stone floors and benchtops.”
