‘Everyone Deserves a Home’

Open House Hobart encourages conversations about solutions to the housing crisis in a series of events.

While the main Open House Hobart event is this weekend, a series of talks and events included in the broader program encourage dialogue about ways of solving the housing crisis.

On Thursday, local architecture practice, 1+2 Architecture, are coming together with developers, The Young Group, to discuss how collectively they are working together to deliver better housing. The discussion will explore how their different perspectives, priorities, and skillsets can align to deliver high-quality, cost-effective housing that serves real community needs, and invite questions from the audience to facilitate a genuine discussion.

Cath Hall, director at 1+2 Architecture, says, ‘our goal is to use our design expertise, experience, and knowledge of deliverable construction methods to create homes that maximise liveability and amenity at a more attainable price point, while fostering an inclusive and connected community.”

The ‘Everyone Deserves a Home’ speaker series, continues into its fourth year, with a discussion themed around ‘more of us together.’ Panellists this year feature Dr Damien Madigan, a registered architect and practice-based housing researcher and associate professor from the University of South Australia; Jane Hilliard, the founding director and head designer/registered building designer at Homeful by Designful, Tasmania; Michi Moses, a registered architect and 2023 Paul Pholeros Architecture Scholarship Recipient, Tasmania; and Jenny Edwards, a building scientist and owner and director of Light House Archi Science, Australian Capital Territory; and is moderated by Dr Helen Norrie, founder of Regional Urban Studies Laboratory (RUSL), and Master of Architecture Course Coordinator at the School of Architecture and Design, University of Tasmania.

The theme of affordable housing is also explored in an exhibition by students from the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Tasmania, which opened on Tuesday night at Brickworks, and remains on show throughout the week, and weekend of Open House Hobart; and a silent art auction, ‘Sheltered Ground,’ is raising money for the Hobart Women’s Shelter.

“The Australian Institute of Architects acknowledges the housing crisis and the need for us to all work together to help solve this. It is critical that this is done in a way that retains what makes Hobart a unique and desirable place to live, and we encourage conversations about this,’ says Jennifer Nichols, Open House Hobart co-producer, and Executive Director of the Tasmanian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects. “Architects have a key role to play in creating these solutions; we’re not just creating houses, we’re creating homes – that can benefit Tasmanians with fulfilling and sustainable, liveable and cohesive communities, that improve the lives and health and wellbeing of those that live in them.”

Open House Hobart is supported by the City of Hobart. Both Open House Hobart is also made possible through the generous support of our sponsors and partners. Major Partners: Tasmanian Government and Futago; Partners: Austral Bricks, Lysaght & The Agency; Media Partner: ArchitectureAU.
