Charles Darwin University and the NT Chapter of Architects is pleased to advise that Lindy Burton will join the Faculty of Arts and Society in her new role as Professor of Architecture at CDU on 14 April.
Lindy brings extensive leadership and management experience to the role. Lindy’s industry practice specialises in the education and health sectors. She was invited to teach at QUT as an industry expert and has held a continuing academic position there since 2008, teaching in a range of subjects including- technical documentation, project management, studio and professional practice. Her current research is in the field of design for healthy buildings. She plans to bring her current research projects with her, where possible. She is the Associate Director for THRIVE, an ARC training centre for advanced building systems against airborne infection transmission.
Lindy is a current member of the National Advisory Panel for the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia. Lindy was a member of the Board of Architects of Queensland from April 2018 to March 2025, more recently serving as Deputy Chairperson.
Lindy will develop a variety of relevant fields of research for Architecture, with interests connecting to education, health, Indigenous knowledges, and climate-responsive and sustainable design that supports people in their local environment.
Lindy is eager to start in the role, move to the NT, and collaborate with colleagues at CDU and in the industry to build the Architecture program.
Lindy will bring commitment, energy, and expertise (from both industry and academic contexts) to the leadership of the Architecture program at CDU.
NT Chapter President, Miriam Wallace said, ‘Lindy grew up and studied architecture in Durban South Africa. She moved to Australia in the mid 90’s and was in practice I think mainly in Queensland till 2007 when she moved into Lecturing at QUT.
Lindy has lots of experience with accreditation and has been on accreditation boards for other universities. Her background in Africa gives her a good understanding of the challenges of remote work, the impact of colonisation, inequable systems etc. Her time in Queensland a knowledge and love of design in the tropics and sustainable design. One of her many passions is people centric design and design for joy, health and wellbeing. She’s also been Deputy Chairperson of the Board of Architects of Queensland, so remains very well grounded in practice.
There were many excellent applicants but Lindy’s experience uniquely qualified her. She was CDUs first choice and I think will an excellent fit.
Lindy came to Darwin at Christmas to visit and loved the city. She very much wants to connect with the Darwin architectural community and I think will be a great person to work with – live long learner and has an understanding of place from moving around that will make it easy for her to listen and incorporate NT nuance in her courses’.
