The Australian Institute of Architects (The Institute), Queensland Chapter, welcomes the Crusafulli Government’s announcement of a clear plan of action on the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, however the choice of Victoria Park as a major venue needs great care and consideration.
The world will be watching how Australia works with our First Nations communities, and how we approach this heritage-listed site of significance to our region’s First People.
Queensland Chapter President Caroline Stalker said it was vitally important that Traditional Owners were respectfully and meaningfully included in the determination of Barambin’s future.
The State heritage listed Centenary Pools represents Australian communities’ embrace of the 1956 Olympics, as well as being architecturally significant.
“Skillful design of the new facility to maintain the cultural heritage values of Centenary Pools is essential, and a huge opportunity to weave the history and stories of Australian Olympic swimming together for future generations,” Ms Stalker said.
“Brisbane inner city communities rely heavily on precious green space for health and well-being. The Institute urges the Queensland Government to replace any lost parkland arising from the Games venues, either through remediation of other areas in the Victoria Park precinct or places nearby.”
Ms Stalker said a detailed, respectful and considered precinct design process incorporating 6 star Greenstar venues and site works that takes in these important community values and aspects of Barambin – Victoria Park must start immediately.
