The Tasmanian Chapter hosted a book launch for the Institute’s publication of ‘Australian House: The Robin Boyd Award for Residential Architecture Since 1981’ on Tuesday 15 April. This significant volume includes the Trial Bay House by HBV Architects (the 2010 Robin Boyd Award for Residential Architecture), and the Shearer’s Quarters by John Wardle Architects (the 2012 Robin Boyd Award for Residential Architecture). A conversation with the architects of these projects, James Jones, and John Wardle, was facilitated by Jennifer Nichols.
This important volume celebrates the 50 winners of the Australian Institute of Architects’ Robin Boyd Award for Residential Architecture. The book presents a treasure trove of original photographs, line drawings and jury comments, paired with fascinating new insights from the architects reflecting on the designs and their impact. Recording much more than architecture, Australian House tells a story about how we live, and how we dream about living.
From coast to city to bush, these outstanding dwellings are exemplars of quintessential Australian life, and the pages of this book chart economic, technological, cultural, and societal changes across time. In the spirit of Robin Boyd, the architect and thinker, Australian House demonstrates curiosity, invention, courage, beauty, and intelligence. This is a significant historical survey and a captivating sourcebook of delightful Australian homes.
