Media summary

Parliament House is a landmark of historical significance, hosting the Commonwealth Parliament between 1901 & 1927, and serving as the house of the Victorian Parliament since 1856. Designed by John George Knight and Peter Kerr, it reflects the wealth and power of 19th-century Melbourne.

By 2006, the building had severely deteriorated due to a century of exposure to the elements and inadequate repairs, necessitating the Facade Restoration Project. This comprehensive restoration, completed over 18 years, involved cleaning, repointing, and replacing deteriorated stone, restoring windows, timberwork, metalwork, and removing redundant services. The project aimed to ensure a 50-year lifespan for the repairs, using both modern technologies and traditional craftsmanship.

Detailed physical audits and over 340 drawings guided the restoration, with materials sourced locally and internationally to match the original. The project successfully addressed the safety and preservation needs of Parliament House, ensuring its important civic function and historical significance for future generations.

The Stoneworks Restoration has made a palpable difference to the way Parliament House operates and is maintained. The building is now watertight and significant deterioration caused by age and neglect has been halted and reversed.

In addition to reducing the ongoing expenditure for maintenance, the project has restored the building to the original architectural vision ensuring the Parliament House building will remain a source of pride for all Victorians and continue to host Members of the Victorian Parliament while they undertake their important legislative role in our democracy.
