Media summary

The new Pakenham Station has fundamentally improved daily life for passengers and the wider township. Its transparent, open‑air design provides clear sightlines across every platform, enhancing safety, comfort and ease of navigation. Intuitive interchange between Metro, V/Line, bus and active‑transport routes, together with direct connections to Main Street, streamlines movement through the precinct and strengthens access to local businesses. Elevating the rail has created a continuous public space beneath the viaduct, now used throughout the day for walking, cycling, recreation and community activity. Operationally, the open‑air typology is robust, efficient and low‑maintenance, while the lightweight, digitally fabricated canopy reduces embodied carbon and long‑term operational costs. Most importantly, the station reflects community identity and Country in a way that is visible and meaningful every day. Embedded Bunurong narratives, including Bunjil feather engravings and eel‑trap motifs, honour culture, strengthen local pride and reinforce the station’s enduring value as a civic asset.
