The Litarimirina and Panina People
Tasmania
The new Launceston General Hospital CT Scanner Room focusses on patient centric care while addressing complex practical requirements.
The project incorporates nature-based imagery as both a static wall to wall ‘fresco’ and a dynamic ‘sky ceiling’, which has the ability to project different sky conditions. These elements bring the calming and uplifting effect of Tasmania’s unique natural environment to a vulnerable moment in patient’s lives. Importantly, the ‘wild-scapes’ also provide a strong connection to the outside world for Hospital staff, many of whom work long hours in internalised spaces
Although spatially simple, the room is more than a ‘box’ requiring consideration of complex and often competing technical demands such as radiation protection, infection control, operational flows and patient safety in its planning and construction.
The design looks beyond the clinical necessities of medical imaging to find the thoughtful possibilities of patient care, in even the smallest of interventions.
